At a time when all segments of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles have reported a 7% slump in retail sales, most segments of electric vehicles (EVs) have reported growth, except for two-wheelers.
The total number of EVs sold in February 2025, however, was down 2% to 1,39,026 units compared with 1,41,743 units retailed a year earlier.
As per data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA) on Friday, electric passenger vehicles (PVs) recorded a healthy 18.95% YoY increase, reflecting growing consumer awareness and adoption of EVs in the personal mobility space, and achieving a market share of 3% of the entire PV segment.
In February 2025, a total of 8,968 units of electric PVs were retailed as compared with 7,539 units in February 2024. Their market share has grown from 2.2% to 3%. The electric two-wheeler segment, reported a YoY decline of 8.05%, but maintained a significant market share at 5.6% (5.7%), underscoring the sustained demand for affordable EV mobility solutions. A total of 76,086 units were retailed compared with 82,745 units in the year-earlier period.
Electric three-wheelers grew 4.95% YoY, and secured the highest market penetration at 56.4% (52.7%). A total of 53,116 units were retailed compared with 50,612 units a year ago.
The electric commercial vehicles segment witnessed a moderate growth of 1.1% YoY, but crossed the crucial 1% market share threshold thus highlighting incremental yet steady progress towards commercial fleet electrification. A total of 856 units were retailed as compared with 847 units in February 2024. Market share increased from 0.94% to 1.03%.
FADA president C.S. Vigneshwar said, “In February 2025, India’s electric vehicle market displayed commendable resilience with positive growth across segments, despite some challenges.”
“As an industry, we must sustain collaborative efforts towards enhancing charging infrastructure, policy incentives, and awareness initiatives to unlock the full potential of EV adoption in India,” he added.
“Aligning with the Government of India’s ambitious EV30@2030 vision — aiming for 30% of private cars, 40% of buses, 70% of commercial vehicles, and 80% of 2-wheelers and 3-wheelers to be electric by 2030, the auto industry needs to do a lot more in driving India’s clean mobility transition forward,” he said.
