Japanese car companies Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. (MSIL) and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), who are in a partnership, reported spectacular performance in December, registering sales growth of 30% and 29% respectively.
Indian SUV maker Mahindra & Mahindra reported 16% year on year (YoY) growth in total sales during December while Tata Motors witnessed marginal sales growth of 1% and Korean auto major Hyundai Motor India saw its sales dropping by 2.4% YoY.
Passenger car market leader MSIL in December sold a of 1,78,248 units as compared with 1,37,551 units a year ago, up 30%.
Domestic sales at 1,32,523 units grew 24% YoY, sales to other OEM at 8,306 units, doubled YoY and exports also surged 39% to 37,419 units.
TKM sold a total of 29,529 units in December up 29% YoY and the sales included exports of 4,642 units.
Sabari Manohar, Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, TKM said, “We are observing a growing shift of consumer preferences towards vehicles offering sustainability, value proposition of dependability quotient, enhanced safety and better resale value which is boosting our sales.”
“Given the existing trend, we are confident of further consolidating our market position thus playing a larger role in driving sustainable mobility along with globalising India’s automobile manufacturing base,” he added.
Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd reported 16%YoY growth in total sales in December at 69,768 units including 41,424 SUVs. The SUV sales grew 18% YoY the company said. Its exports grew 70% to 3,092 units.
Tata Motors Ltd reported total domestic sales of 76,599 units, up 1% YoY. This includes Commercial Vehicles sales of 33,875 units, down 1% YoY and Passenger Vehicles sales of 44,289 units, up 1% YoY.
Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. said, “Looking ahead, we remain optimistic about the outlook for the PV industry. With multiple product launches, innovations and a strengthened multi-powertrain strategy, Tata Motors is well poised for further growth in CY2025.”
Hyundai Motor India Ltd during the month sold 55,078 units, a drop of 2.4% YoY. Domestic sales at 42,208 units dropped by 1.3% while exports fell by 6.1% to 12,870 units.
Tarun Garg, whole time director and chief operating officer, Hyundai Motor India said, “HMIL has managed to sustain sales momentum in 2024, despite strong headwinds faced by the industry at large.”
Honda Cars India said it sold a total of 9,460 units in December 2024 as compared with 11,651 units sold a year ago, down
While domestic sales dropped to 5,603 units from 7,902 units a year ago, exports grew marginally to 3,857 units from 3,749 units in the same period last year.
JSW MG Motor India achieved a YOY growth of 55% in December 2024, selling 7,516 units. “This strong performance underscores the company’s continued momentum in the dynamic Indian automotive market,” it said.
